We have a real opportunity to rally public support and encourage the City Council to launch a weekend pedestrian street on Cooper Street this summer. It’s a simple idea that could boost local businesses, build community, and make downtown more vibrant and walkable.

Efforts are underway to transform part of downtown Santa Cruz into a more walkable, community-friendly space. A community group is pushing the city to make Cooper Street pedestrian-only on weekends.

It’s time for a pedestrian street in Santa Cruz: 95% say yes

Santa Cruz needs a summertime pedestrian zone to enhance its reputation, improve safety and pull folks in, write four members of Pacific for People. The grassroots group is intent on seeing downtown become a more vibrant space, a goal city-dwellers have aspired to since the 1989 earthquake left downtown in rubble. At least 15 cities in California have already established permanent pedestrian streets, they write. It’s time for Santa Cruz to create its own weekend version.

🚲 Pacific For People Sunday Bike Ride – The Lost Boys Edition 🧛‍♂️

📍 Meet at the intersection of Cooper Street & Pacific Avenue

Join us for a relaxed, fun bike ride through Santa Cruz to visit many of the iconic filming locations from the 1987 cult classic "The Lost Boys" — all without the need for a 4,000-pound motor vehicle wrapped around you. Enjoy the ride, the nostalgia, and the fresh air.
